I think they were originally meant for warmer weather, possibly in a tropical area?
I agree with jennifer: I think we consider them early plants because of the "forcing" people do.(Of course, we have two Christmas cactuses that have diverged: one is a Thanksgiving cactus and the other is an Easter cactus.)
